It started when we were little kids, ITS MINE! NO, ITS MINE! I HAD IT FIRST! Then, it just continues on through our life time. I made that song first, your sued. Avril Lavigne demonstrates this perfectly for the public to see. Lavigne's song "Girlfriend" is defiantly one of the most popular and catchy songs of the 2000's so far, but was it stolen? Tommy Dubar says it is. Mr.Dubar's band Rubinoo's realised a hit "I wanna be your boyfriend" in 1978, then, Avril Lavigne realised "girlfriend", which share the same tempo and some lyrics. Coincidence? I think so. Because of the similarities in the two songs, Lavigne is now facing a lawsuit, which of course she is pleading not guilty to. Her explanation to this mishap is believable. Lavigne says that she had absolutely no idea who this band was, and had never heard this song before. This makes sense, because it is a very old band, and wasn't exactly a hit song. Avril is outraged with this accusation, and further explains that lots of songs 'copy' each others notes, etc. It's not impossible that two people thought of the same chorus lines.
When you listen to the two different songs, you can clearly hear the part that they are saying she copied. The whole rhythm is the same, the 'hey hey you you' lyrics are the same, but truthfully that's about it that's the same. The actual speed of the two songs, is not the same, Avril's is quicker, and she has completely different lyrics. Although technically this would qualify as plagiarism because she doesn't have permission and it is the same chorus, it's also on the boarder line because Avril said that she didn't know the song existed so how could she ask? Whether the court decides this is plagiarism or not, i think the whole this is blown way out of proportion.
Sure, Tommy Dubar has his reasons to sue Avril. I mean who wouldn't want to sue a very popular, and rich pop star? Dubar was right to want to cash in for his 'creation' but its now gone too far. Going back to what Avril said, there are a lot of songs that have similar notes or lyrics, but if someones pleads that she didn't do it on purpose, then is it really worth it to push on and potentially ruin the girls career. Ive always loved the saying that there is no such thing as publicity, because it's true. But in this case, all the publicity for Avril, is not exactly not good for her. This accusation, hints to her fans that maybe she isn't as talent as they think. It brings up the question if she really writes all her music, is she original or just another Vanilla Ice? On the other hand, her strong fight against this also paints a picture that she is a dedicated and strong artist, that is not going to let someone charge her when shes not guilty. Avril has never been one to keep her mouth shut, and this is no exception. Lavigne is very persistent in making sure that everyone knows she did not steal anything. Other stars like Chantal kreviazuk have voiced their opinion on this subject, Chantal doesn't believe Avril and thinks she should suffer because of it. Still, Avril Lavigne stays strong.
Hey Hey You You I don't want to be sued! Avril Lavigne has always been terrible popular, and this just puts her in the limelight even more. Ultimately, its Avril's fans decide the out come, is she just the sweet and innocent Canadian born we all know and love? Or is she a lying copy cat. Id choose the first, but you can decide yourself.
